“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”
In 1967 Alf Markham joined the AHFC and unbeknown to him a legacy of three generations would follow his steps and represent the AHFC both with pride, passion and distinction.
In 1970 and 1974 Alf Markham would coach the under 13’s and 17’s to the pinnacle by winning their respective grand finals. In 1971 and 1972 Alf took on the task of Club President and in 1976 was made a Life Member.
John Markham joined AHFC in 1976 as a junior and played over 350 games for our great club both juniors and seniors. During a coveted career over 28 years John would go on to Captain the senior side, win three senior Best & Fairest 1990, 93 & 95’ and make the number 9 Guernsey sernomonous. John was named Captain in the 1990’s team of the decade.
Like his father Alf, John has earned the respect of all that have represented this great club both on and off the field since its inception back in 1965.
Now, three generations later the legacy of the Markham name continues with Lucas Markham joining the football club. Lucas will play his first game for the club on Sunday 6th April 2014, at Canning Street Reserve and has been given the No.9 Guernsey previously worn by his father John. I was fortunate enough to see John play during the nineties and by all indications and from what I have seen of Lucas thus far “the apple has definitely not fallen far from the tree”.
We at the AHFC wish Lucas all the very best and know just like his father and Grandfather will wear the Big White V with the same honour, distinction, pride and passion for many more years to come.
