HEIGHTS OUT OF FINALS RACE

The Avondale Heights Senior team finals campaign is over following their loss to Airport West in the first semi final at Coburg City Oval.  Airport West won a crucial toss and elected to kick with a strong breeze in the first quarter. In the opening minutes, the Heights midfield won possession but the team could not convert some opportunities to score. The Eagles soon took full advantage and with some skilful play and quality goals, they were soon out to a seven goal lead. Late goals by Nick Grabowski and Patty Rose pegged the lead back to 30 points. In the second quarter, the Heights kicked some early goals and looked like they were about to get back into the game but some costly turnovers and attacking play by the Eagles saw them continue to put pressure on the scoreboard. By half time, the Heights had not closed the gap on the scoreboard. In the third quarter, Airport West consolidated their lead with five unanswered goals. With a ten goal deficit at three quarter time, the Heights task was to huge and the game ended with a convincing win to the Eagles. A disappointed Saade Ghazi stated that the team's performance was the worst for the season and the team knew that they had let themselves down. Despite the loss, the EDFL nominated the Avondale Heights as the big improvers in the Premier Division and the disappointing loss in the first semi final will make the team more determined next season.
