EDFL SEASON 2020 UPDATE
THE EDFL Board of Management has this evening elected to cancel all senior competitions for the 2020 season.
This decision applies to all senior men’s and women’s football competitions, including men’s reserves and thirds competitions.
Following extensive consultation and consideration, the League has decided against conducting a senior men’s and women’s competition commencing on July 25.
In the current circumstances, this decision is in the best interests of the League, its Clubs and the wider EDFL community.
The League will now seek to examine the merits of conducting an alternative competition format for senior men’s and women’s football to be played later this year.
The EDFL remains committed to conducting a junior girls and boys competition commencing in July and following today’s release of confirmed AFL Victoria Return-To-Play Protocols, the Board is satisfied the 2020 EDFL junior season may safely proceed.
The provisional start dates released by the EDFL last week remain in place for all junior football competitions, men’s Under 18.5 competitions and open age netball, and the League will now commence work on providing fixtures for the 2020 season, subject to team submissions due in early July.
The EDFL is mindful of recent government announcements regarding local COVID-19 ‘hotspots’ and will continue to work diligently with those Clubs who are impacted by these developments in their local area.
We continue to urge all EDFL participants to practice good hygiene and adhere to all government and AFL Victoria guidelines to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
Given the extraordinary nature and complexity of issues we are currently facing, the EDFL Board and Staff would like to acknowledge the ongoing support and patience we have been afforded by the entire EDFL community.
We now look forward to celebrating the EDFL’s 90th Anniversary with a fantastic season of junior football and open age netball.
